BSNL calls for fresh WiMax tenders

10-06-2009

India's public sector telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) on June 9th floated expressions of interest (EOIs) for providing wireless broadband service based on WiMAX to its customers. The partnership will be on non-exclusive, revenue sharing franchisee basis.

Franchisees will provide broadband access services in 2.5GHZ band. This time around (let's hope) more suitable applicants would be allowed to tender

The franchisee will be awarded on License Service Area (LSA)-Franchisee Territory basis for 16 circles.

The proposed wireless broadband services will provide broadband data access to the internet, VPN clients, QoS to individual subscribers, video conferencing, IP multicast, wireless leased lines and other services suitable for broadband wireless access in 2.5 GHZ band - the spectrum allotted to BSNL.

Earlier, BSNL had to cancel the tendering process amid allegations of unsuitable companies being in the fray for the franchisee deal.
