Vodafone to enter enterprise data market

Setting up a network operation centre (NOC) in Pune
Vodafone Essar, India's second-largest wireless operator by revenue, is entering the fast-growing enterprise services market in a move seen as an attempt to offset the falling voice business in the face of savage competition.
The company will launch fixed-line enterprise services to cater to both small enterprises and big conglomerates next month, Vodafone Group's director for global business services Tom Craig said.
"The enterprise market in India is growing at a rapid pace. This presents a great opportunity for us to offer a slew of services. Initially our focus will be on providing point-to-point connectivity solutions" said Craig. The Indian enterprise data connectivity market is growing at a 10% annual rate and is estimated to be around $10 billion (approximately Rs 47,000 crore) in the next five years. The company will initially offer simple telephony, domestic and international leased lines and domestic and global VPN connectivity.
The Indian subsidiary of the world's second largest telco by revenue is also considering opportunities in enterprise virtualisation solutions. The company is keen on introducing technologies such as cloud telephony and cloud computing, which experts believe are cost-effective mechanisms for enterprises.
"We have launched these services in UK, Spain, Italy, and Germany. Our experience is that customers save as much as 65% of operating costs by adopting them" added Craig. Vodafone's step is towards facilitating total communication needs by fully integrating and managing the fixed and mobile communication services.
To facilitate the rollout of services under the new strategy, Vodafone Essar is currently setting up a network operation centre (NOC) in Pune. "We have started offering services (under the new envelope of practices) to some of our large mobile services clients. The NOC at Pune will further strengthen our offerings" explained Vodafone Essar's enterprise and carrier business director, Naveen Chopra.
Vodafone Essar has a 25% share in the Indian mobile market. The segment has witnessed sharp erosion in per user revenue in the last six months following steep tariff cuts by new and existing operators. Globally, over one-third of Vodafone's revenue comes from the enterprise business.
