Indian handset brands splurge on marketing

They're acting just like the big guys of the handset world


Zen Mobile, one of India's mobile phone companies, has roped in actor Amitabh Bachchan as its brand ambassador. Zen Mobiles is geared up to launch a slew of QWERTY and multimedia feature rich mobile handsets loaded with social networking experience at affordable price in the Indian market.

Likewise, Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev has been appointed the goodwill ambassador for Olive Telecom in India.He will lend support to its range of devices such as the OliveFrvrOn - a one of a kind dual power hybrid phone, OliveWiz - a triple sim QWERTY keypad phone along with a host of mobile handsets for the Indian market.

Spice Mobile has already appointed Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor as its brand ambassador. It says it has earmarked Rs 120 crore for marketing and promotion this fiscal. It has a portfolio of about 50 handsets, and plans to launch about 2-3 models every month, some of which would be targeted at the urban markets. Spice has launched touchscreen handsets like the S7000, priced at Rs 7,499, to woo younger customers.

"From a cycle of 2-3 years, the youth is now changing his/her handset every 6-9 months. This is the market that we want to tap," he said.

According to research firm IDC, about 101.54 million mobile phones were sold in India in 2009, of which 12.3 per cent were manufactured by domestic handset-makers.
