RIL may initially adopt WiMAX

13-06-2010

Later it plans to migrate to TD-LTE

Talking on its broadband strategy, executives of Reliance Industries (RIL) say that currently high speed wireless broadband will be the key focus area. In voice, emphasis will be on IP rather than circuit switched voice. Initial deployment could be WiMax based with an eventual aim to deploy TD-LTE. A commercial launch is likely in the next 1-2 years.

Reliance Industries had on Friday, announced the acquisition of 95% stake in privately held telecom operator Infotel Broadband. Interestingly, the unlisted Infotel Broadband Services was the only firm to win the broadband spectrum in all 22 zones in an auction that ended on Friday.

RIL officials say that the company aims to be the leader in broadband. It expects over 100 million subscribers in the next 3-5 years, an aggressive goal compared to the current 8 million. Accordingly, the company has planned an investment of $4 billion over the next 3 years and this includes spectrum cost of $2.75 billion. The funding will be through an equal mix of debt and equity
