BSNL plans Rs.5 billion WiMAX tender

13-04-2007

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) will soon float a tender to offer WiMax services in 1000 Indian cities. This will be the largest deployment of WiMax in the world.

The total value of the tender would be about Rs 4-5 billion with each trans-receiver costing about Rs 3-4 million. A WiMax installation can cover a radius of 25-30 km against a GSM tower coverage of 1-1.5 km.

From a cost and efficiency point of view, WiMax is beleived to be three to four times more spectrally efficient than 3.5G. It will initially face a challence from a new mobile technology, HSDPA, which offers 1-2 Mbps data transfers while on the move. However, WiMax can support data speeds of up to 70 mbps.

BSNL is awaiting the final policy announcement by the department of telecommunications on 3G spectrum and broadband wireless access. The planned tender would be for 1,000 base trans-receivers, which would be a mix of both non-line of sight (NLOS) and line of sight (LOS) distance.

NLOS trans-receivers have a smaller radius but higher bandwidth, whereas LOS trans-receivers have a larger coverage area but lower bandwidth as one travels farther away from the base.
