Touchscreen phones are hot: while in 2009 they accounted for some 12% of mobiles sold in India, their share is expected to grow to around 25% this year. While the segment is dominated by Samsung, LG has grand designs on it, and is targeting 20 per cent of its sales in 2010 to come from touchscreen phones. Its plans include pricing to go to a low of Rs 5,000.
Samsung is currently the price leader in the touchscreen segment, with touch-enabled, keypad-less models starting at around Rs 7,000. LG already has a mass touchscreen phone 'Cookie' in the price range of Rs 8,000. The cheapest touch-enabled phone with a qwerty keypad and 3G is from Samsung and costs around Rs 11,000. LG is now ready with a 3G-enabled, qwerty touchscreen phone priced at Rs 10,000
LG plans to launch 40 handsets including 10 smartphones - six based on Android platform and four on Windows system. Android phones are likely to touch the Rs 10,000 mark as well this year, from Rs 14,000 currently The current crop of Android phones in the country is designed primarily for multimedia users and usually support only on-screen keyboards.
