Data Centers: Bharti seeks U.S., Australian partners
18-02-2010
Looking to compete with rivals Tata Comm and Reliance Global
Bharti Airtel is looking for partners in U.S. and Australia to form a strategic alliance or a joint venture to grow its data centre business. The company plans to close these deals in the next two quarters, according to a Business Standard report.
The international partner is expected to provide expertise on the technology side of the business, according to a source quoted in the report
One reason behind the move is to close in on the company's rivals in the international bandwidth business. Tata Communications and Reliance Global have a significant presence in data centers abroad
For its part, Bharti now offers data centre services and owns storage space in cities like Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Pune. In addition to storage it provides its enterprise clients with data protection and security. The Indian data centre business is growing at 20-30 per cent, and experts say India is on the radar of US-based pure play data centre service companies like Equinix and Rackspace.
The enterprise business of Bharti Airtel, which offers services like Internet, VPN and VSAT contributes 21 per cent of Bharti's revenues, and the company puts 20 per cent of its capital expenditure into this business.
