Indian CDN market expected to grow to $100 million by 2014
India's big telcos see money in delivery services for media houses and content delivery networks
Bharti Airtel is partnering with US-based Limelight Networks Inc for content delivery network (CDN) services in India. Limelight Networks helps speed up delivery of web content. Bharti said it would be able to provide solutions for delivery of rich media and enterprise applications. It said the Indian CDN market was expected to grow to $100 million by 2014.
Tata Communications is acquiring the Mosaic business of the BT Group (formerly British Telecom). Mosaic is a web portal-based on-demand digital media management platform that manages content and workflow from production to distribution across market ecosystems.
The Mosaic business helps media customers improve cross-enterprise content creation, management and multi-format delivery. It is targeted at media customers encompassing production houses, emerging digital media publishers, content service providers, and TV channels
Apart from many foreign clients, India-based clients of Mosiac include Star TV, NDTV and UTV mainly delivery of content to US or other global customers
Details of the deal, including the acquisition cost have not been disclosed. The unaudited value of the gross assets included in this transaction was ?0.5 million (Rs 3.7 crore) on September 30, 2009
"The acquisition of the Mosaic platform strengthens our global media and entertainment portfolio, with powerful cloud-based digital media management applications that can be accessed over the Web. This enhances our existing portfolio of services that we are offering to the media and entertainment sector" said Vinod Kumar, President and COO, Tata Communications.
Tata Communications? Media and Entertaining Services business is going global. Its current portfolio of services includes:
* Video-over-fiber solution for transmitting multimedia content from India to US or other markets.
* Event broadcasting service, to capture ad hoc breaking news and events for long distance coverage.
* Digital satellite news gathering (DSNG) Service, which allows instant news up-linking for reporters.
* Broadcasting services that offer two formats, one for delivering digital channels to overseas markets called Multi Channel Per Carrier (MCPC), and a Single Channel Per Carrier (SCPC) format transmission of TV programs studio-to-studio within India.
* Webcasting for corporates to communicate with offices in different geographical locations and
* Network services, for streaming content using e-cinema or Web TV, or delivering video-on-demand.
