Claims to offer 7Mbps at a distance of 15km

BSNL yesterday launched mobile WiMAX services, the first commercial launch of the services in the country. BSNL will initially cover rural areas, at a charge of Rs 140 / month. It claims that the technology offers broadband speed of 7 Mbps at a distance of 15kms

BSNL is already offering WiMAX services in alliance with Soma Networks in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. These services are focused mainly on enterprises in urban areas.

BSNL's rural services will connect Common Service Centres, which will act as touch point for getting utility services and e-governance. The broadband connectivity will also allow video conferencing, tele-medicine and tele-education.

In the initial launch phase, BSNL cover 1,000 Block Headquarters, which in turn will be connected to 11,500 Common Service Centres. The next phase will connect 50,000 Common Service Centres.

A few days earlier, P Raghavan, chief general manager, BSNL, Karnataka Telecom Circle, said that BSNL resorts to WiMAX services to make broadband services available in rural districts. Many of its Common Service Centers were reached through wired broadband. For the rest of them, which are in the remotest areas, WiMAX connectivity was being adopdted.

"There are two types of path receivers. The outdoor receiver can reach a range of about 10 kms and the indoor receiver a smaller radius of 2-3 kms...The WiMAX services use radio access technology operating through line of site (LOS), thereby providing high speed. It can accommodate fixed and mobile usage models and provide broadband connectivity anywhere, anytime and for any device"
