VoIP joint venture targets ILD market

Hopes to gain an early bird advantage as VoIP opportunities open up


An Indian joint venture, GANTON India Pvt Ltd. with several Indian and international partners plans to launch a commercial Cellular VoIP network in India. The firm will use patented technology from TCM MOBILE, which is also investing in the venture.

The venture would be registered with DOT as an Internet Telephony Service Provider with Voice. Initially it targets the international long-distance voice market where Internet telephony is allowed.

U.S.-based TCM MOBILE LLC has developed a patented Cellular VoIP technology that delivers mobile telecommunication services like voice, data, video and location-based advertising through mobile devices.

The venture is now in the process of securing substantial credit lines for purchase of related equipment. The projected capital expenditure is $300 million. The network will at first target service for 500,000 subscribers with capacity to expand into millions when demand materializes.

Network buildout will be deployed in stages over a three-year period. It will include 5,000 site locations that provide an initial coverage area of a significant portion of Delhi and the National Capital Region of Delhi.

GANTON India Private Limited is a subsidiary of GANTON Limited, a multinational technology and investments company.

As part of the joint venture, ZTE Corporation will expand its supplier relationship with GANTON. ZTE Corporation also plans to provide related equipment for the build-out and deployment of the network.

Sanjiv Kapoor, CEO of GANTON India, is also CEO of the joint venture company. IndiaBandwidth people spoke to Kapoor, who said that the Indian market offers big revenue opportunities. Internet telephony is at an infant stage in India, while it is making waves in Korea and many other developed countries. In India, the joint venture hopes that more markets like STD will open up, which will position his firm to gain an early-bird advantage
