MTNL, Google to partner in WiMax?

3G spec may be used mostly for voice, providing a data market opening for Google
Google is reported to be in talks with Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) to jointly bid for WiMax spectrum, according to CNBC-TV18 reports. Google is keen on holding 50% in the joint venture.
This comes after the Department of Telecom (DoT) has given permission for foreign players to bid for WiMax and 3G spectrum - provided they tie up with Indian operators.
If this joint venture does take place Google will look to own 50% in the joint venture and would provide Google Voice through WiMax.
MTNL has a franchise in Mumbai and Delhi, the richest Indian markets. 3G operators are reportedly planning to use their 3G spectrum for voice, which implies an opportunity in data for players like Google.
