Reliance invests in WiMax chipmaker

Reliance Technology Ventures has acquired a 10 per cent stake in Sequans Communications, a French WiMax chip manufacturer. This could help Reliance Communication roll out its WiMax services faster.
At present, WiMax is being provided over Reliance's 2G platform. Reliance has launched services in Pune and Bangalore, and is in the process of rolling out services in 10-12 cities, including the metros.
Sequans Communications provides system-on-chip solutions for both fixed and mobile WiMax services
The company also offers chip technologies for network components like femtocells, base stations, subscriber terminals and home gateways. It holds a patent for MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output communications), a mobile WiMax technology, and has tie-ups with equipment manufacturers like Taiwan?s TECON.
Alcatel Lucent and Motorola are among those holding a stake in the French chip-maker.
