08-10-2007

BSNL plans to issue tenders for setting up 50000 Common Service Centres (CSCs) or ICT-enabled kiosks, across India using WiMax technology. DoT has sought the Communication Minister's approval to allocate WiMax spectrum to BSNL for the project.

BSNL may be allocated spectrum in the 2.5 GHz frequency band for its wireless broadband foray. The project is expected to be completed by August next year. The CSCs will primarily cater to semi-urban and rural areas.

BSNL's plans for urban areas include the rollout of WiMax services in 70 towns and cities by mid 2008. The company will soon issue tenders estimated at Rs 10 billion for this project.

Telsima Corp, Aperto Networks and Alcatel Lucent, among others, have expressed interest in bidding for the urban project.
