Aircel to sell telecom tower business

23-06-2009

Aircel plans to sell its telecom tower business. Aircel wants to do this to get funding for its $5 billion expansion plan to be a pan-India operator by 2010-end. Besides, it may bid at the upcoming 3G spectrum auctions, and this would require considerable funding. So Aircel plans a lease-rather-than-own strategy for its telecom towers.

Aircel is reported to be in talks with the Tata-Quippo tower company for the selloff. Aircel's 12,000 towers are valued by top executives at about $1.5 billion.

Aircel is now majority owned by Malysia's Maxis Communications Bhd
