A tectonic boost for telecom equipment

The Government's Rs.175 billion blueprint to fund telecom manufacture, R&D and IP, along with its Preferential Market Access policy signals BIG change in the landscape for large telecom system design and manufacture in India.

It is probable that the next few years will see the emergence of four or five big private local firms in carrier networking, wireless and video. Funding details:

SDN a big opportunity for India

The move to software-defined networking has spread to the telecom sector ("network function virtualisation"). The payoff from this move could be that off-the-shelf hardware could eventually run telecom routers, switches and servers.

That's a big deal for India which is struggling to get its hardware sector off the ground, but has a thriving and innovative software sector. Already many small startups are onto this trend.
